Hawaii/Tahiti - NEW!
Traditionally, only Windstar and Paul Gauguin Cruises have offered cruises in and around Tahiti. The only other way to visit Tahiti or Hawaii has been to jump on the longer Trans-Pacific Voyages, which are repositioning cruises. Where the ships sail from Hawaii to Australia in October and in the reverse direction in March.
As for cruises around Hawaii, the only ship based there year-round has been a dirty old NCL ship, which attracts a party-hard Vegas crowd. You'd think there would be many cruise lines that would want to offer cruises around Hawaii. There are, but the Jones Act prevents this as it was designed to protect and encourage local cruise lines, shipyards, and employment. In reality, it has decimated what could be a thriving domestic cruise market as all the big players have ships built and registered in foreign tax-free states and crewed by overseas staff from developing nations. By doing so they also avoid huge corporate taxes.NCL is the only line that meets the requirements of the Jones Act.
Jones Act—Requires at least 75 percent U.S. vessel ownership; at least 75 percent of the crew to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents; and the vessels to have been built or rebuilt in the United States
This year, many high-end brands have found their traditional markets, such as the Med, saturated with too many ships, and have decided to try new itineraries that involve cruising between Hawaii and Tahiti.
This is excellent news for us as repositioning or one-way cruises to exotic, far-flung destinations are not 'as yet' on many people's radars. They are on ours, as the cruise lines will have trouble filling these. That's where and why heavy discounting will be required, which we are starting to see flow through now.
